David, this was so interesting. It seems like his mentor had to be related. Great photography and research!

Great write up Dave. A quick comment on stones facing East from an article I read was on the return of Christ , he is believed to appear first in the East, hence the reason.

Yes, the bodies always face east, but older English cemeteries have inscription on West side of stone. Most cemeteries of that time period have a mix of the two as individuals decided based on their own wishes. But most people followed the convention of the particular cemetery. Hopewell inscriptions face east but Union inscriptions are on the west side of stone. I did not put this in the article but there is a faint M or W on the west side of Margaret Simpson's stone. It could possibly be a reminder that the back side faces west. IDK. We intend to repair Margaret Simpson's parents' stones that are in bad shape near her stone. Probably later in year. I will be sure to post photos for you to see when finished.

What a great detective story. The images are gorgeous and really support your attributions to Aaron Potter.

David- Thanks for sharing this. I particularly love A. Potter's inscription. Something about it is really striking. Its positioning. The blank around it. And the representation of the name "A. Potter."
